National Library Service holds story reading contest in Orange Walk

Article Date
February 27, 2020

The Belize National Library Service and Information System (BNLSIS) held its 9th annual Story Reading Contest on November 12, 2008, in Orange Walk Town under the theme Growing With Reading.

The Story Reading Contest was held in memory of Ms. Beverly Fuller, a well-known teacher at St. Ignatius Primary School who during her teaching career had a passion for helping children to learn how to read. She passed away three years ago.

Six primary schools from Orange Walk Town participated in the Story Reading Contest: Presbyterian School, Solomon Seventh Day Adventist School, La Immaculada School, St. Peter’s Anglican School, Chapel School and Louisiana Government School. The contest was divided into three categories: Category I – Standard I, Category II – Standard II-IV and Category III – Standard V & VI.

Prizes were given to the three top readers in each category. For Category I, first place went to Chen Hui Hu from La Immaculada School, second place Franco Tun of Chapel School, and third place Jasmine Ayuso of Solomon Seventh Day Adventist School. All the winners received cash prizes, courtesy of the Sandy Hunter Library Sub-Committee in Orange Walk Town.

For Category II, first place winner was Giselle Rodriguez of Louisiana Government School; second place was won by Maria Nembhard of Chapel School, and third place winner was Lianne Moguel of La Immaculada School.

For Category III, the first place winner was Shanell Guerra of Presbyterian School; second place winner was Dovini Chell from Lousiana Government School, and third place winner was Kendra Petillo of St. Peter’s Anglican School. The winners received cash prizes.

The two first-place winners for Category II and Category III were given the Dee & Viv trophies, courtesy of Benny’s Home Center.

The BNLSIS is grateful for the support of all those who made the Story Reading Contest a success and welcome the opportunity given to the students of six schools in the Orange Walk District to display their reading talents. Thanks also to the judges, time-keeper, tabulator, and master of ceremonies.

The BNLSIS will continue to rotate its Story Reading Contest among all district towns until full sponsorship is obtained and maintained for the Story Reading Contest to be held at the national level.

The next Story Reading Contest will be held in Punta Gorda in 2009.
