History of the San Estevan Community Library
The San Estevan Community Library opened its doors in 2008 under the Village Council, Mr. Fidelmar Hernandez at that time Mrs. Adolfina Vasquez along with Ms. Nancy Canche were the librarians at the moment. For unknown reasons, it closed down.
The library reopened in September 2014 under the Village council of Mr. Elmer Flores. From September 2014 to April 10th,2014 Ms. Nancy Canche was holding over as the Community librarian. During this time Mr. Flores was already in discussions with Ms. Lusiola Castillo for the San Estevan Community Library.
Mrs. Cansino did her training at the B.N.L.S.I.S. from April 20th to April 23rd, 2015, she started to work as the community librarian 27th April, 2015 to June 30th 2015 under the Village council of Mr. Elemer Flores. We used to open Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 2 pm to 4 pm.
In June 2015, Mr. Flores started the agreement with Ms. Lusiola Castillo for the San Estevan Community Library to remain under the B.N.L.S.I.S. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Ms. Lusiola and Mr. Flores which stated that the San Estevan Community Library is no longer under the Village Council and we belong to the Family of the B.N.L.S.I.S.
From July 2016 to the present, we have been under the umbrella of the B.N.L.S.I.S. Thanks to the help of the community and the National Library we have seen great progress in our Library.
In September 2022 we were so lucky that we were informed that the library will be the First Digital Connect Center. Library renovation started in October 2022 with the tilling of the library floor thanks to the National Library Service of Belize. On March 1st ,2023 the launch of the Digital Connect Center occurred the Government of Belize, UNDP, and Beltraide. After the launching of the center the chief librarian decided that we needed to secure the place. A portion of the community center was given to the library by the Chair Lady Mrs. Rosaura Chan for a bathroom to be built and a door that gave entrance to the community center to be sealed. The San Estevan community Library counts with a comfortable place to for the children and all who visit always leave with the sensation of wanting to return again.
The business and community contribute to the library development by granting donations, and tokens for giveaways to patrons, depending on the activity.
