The Allan Arthurs Library came into existence in the year 2002 when the building was constructed. This Library was named after Mr. Arthurs since he was a great contributor to the library. He resided in Dangriga Town and once owned a lumber yard. Mr. Arthurs was also the Mayor of Dangriga Town and up to this present moment, he is the chief book donor to the library.
Before opening, the staff began working at the library on October 15th, 2004. The training of Susan Nicholas, Senior Library Assistant, was completed by Ms. Margaret Belisle and Mrs. Trevellee Williams. The Library opened its doors on Monday, November 1st, 2004, at 9:00 a.m. sharp. Opening hours at the time were from 12:00 - 7:00 p.m. since only one person was hired.
The Allan Arthurs Library has been a library with great achievements and developments. Since its establishment, there have been many activities going on in the field of fundraising. To be more precise we (Susan and the library committee) have had barbeque sales, party bag sales, cake sales, rice and beans sales, and group trips. These fundraising events enabled the installation of five security bar windows, a faucet in the restroom, a cooler, two screen doors, a library sign, a ladder, fans, and other minor necessities of the library.
We have a summer program which is a big part of the annual activity of the library. Prosperous sales are very helpful to the library. After each summer program, the library carries out a field trip.
Referring to book donations, there have been numerous. We have donors like Mr. Allan Arthurs Jr., Ms. Felene Cayetano, the Education Department, Ms. Sylvia Flores, Caribou Caye, the Catholic Church, Mrs. Joyce Westby, neighborhood youth, the Neal family, Ms. Smith and community members!
