Las Flores Community Library

When the sisters of Charity of Nazareth came to help in August 2006, the people of Las Flores began to hope some of their dreams might come true. Leaders willing to work emerged and conducted a census from February through May 2007 to verify the felt needs and the population of Las Flores.

The census showed that out of a population of about 4,000, 53% were children 18 years and younger; 40% were between the ages of 19 and 55, and only 7% were over 56 years old - a very young Las Flores! The two top-mentioned needs were a clinic and a library. Since many people thought that the clinic would continue, plans were made to build the library.

Mayor Simeon Lopez, RECONDIV, and the Belmopan City Council were permitted to build it. Oscar Castro drew the plans, which the City Council readily approved. Fundraisers and significant donations from Las Flores, Belmopan, and the U.S.A. made it possible to begin building October 28, 2007.

The leadership group, "New Hope for Las Flores," continued working with the people and organizations in the area until the library was completed and inaugurated on April 5, 2009. So, by working together, great things can be accomplished!

We began offering computer classes and more when the library opened its doors to children, young people, and adults. Over time, we expanded our offerings to include sewing and painting classes. Additionally, we supported special needs children, helping them embark on embroidery projects to improve their lives. We still offer many fun activities to unite children and adults!
