Following Hurricane Hattie in 1961, the construction of a new capital city commenced in Belmopan. Along with other government offices, there was a need for a library to serve the local residents. Consequently, the British Overseas Development Mission approved and funded the construction of a building for the Belmopan Public Library.
On August 24, 1970, the Hon. Santiago Perdomo, Minister of Education along with Mr. Leo Bradley, Chief Librarian, inaugurated the library building.
The library gradually expanded its services, and today serves Belmopan as well as the many surrounding communities, including Teakettle, Camalote, Roaring Creek, Cotton Tree, St. Mathew's, St. Margaret's, Las Flores, Salvapan, and San Martin.
Services are provided to adults and children through lending, reference, reading, and research areas.
