The San Pedro Public Library was established in 1973. Belize National Library Service requested San Pedro High School to manage and run the Library. At the time it was located at the Catholic Parish Hall, which is at the center of town next to The Alliance Bank. The high school managed the library to serve the community especially the high school students. High school students asking to volunteer their time to help keep the library open to serve the community. At the time the high school was using part of the building for a classroom.
In 1981 with the help of Mrs. Mary Beissner and community leaders, the library was moved to a new location. That new location is where the library is presently situated, south end Barrier Reef Drive, by the beachside opposite to San Pedro Roman Catholic School. The San Pedro Public Library has served the community for 37 years.
